Cooking, Food and Health

On Food and Cooking: The Science and Lore of the Kitchen, Harold McGee

CookWise: The Secrets of Cooking revealed, Shirley O. Corriher

Women's Day Encyclopedia of cookery, this series of books is from the 60's and are full of odd interesting recipes and tip-bits about food in many cultures. I only have a few but I am always looking for them at used stores and garage sales.

Slow Cooking, Catherine Atkinson. I love this book it makes you look at your crock pot as a kitchen tool not something you have to use for a whole meal.

Safe Food, Marion Nestle. This books explains aspects of food born illness as well as food regulation and processing in the U.S. This is an excellent book that shows why the USDA and FDA often don't fix our food system issues but in fact make things worse.

Omnivore's Dilemma, Micheal Pollan. This is seriously one of my favorite books and if you are not familiar with the issues in our American food system this is the book to start your education with.

Rabbits:

Your Rabbit: A Kids Guide to Raising and Showing. This was one of my go-to books as a kid. It's a good place to start for anyone of any age who is new to rabbits.

Standard of Perfection Standard Bred Rabbits & Cavies 2011-2015 You will need this if you want to raise purebred rabbits in the US. It covers all the  American Rabbit Breeder Association excepted breeds; it is useful even if you are just curious about different rabbit breeds.

Chickens:

Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens: A good place to start with general information.

Like the "Your Rabbit" book, this was one of my go-to books as a child. It's a great place to start for anyone who is new to chickens.

American Standard Of Perfection. This includes breed descriptions of all poultry breeds accepted by the American Poultry Association. A must have if you want to breed poultry and a fun book for any poultry lover.
